Fjadrargljufur Canyon
Fjadrargljufur Canyon will take you on a short and spectacular drive from Vík í Mýrdal to Skógar. The canyon is around 2 km long and up to 100 m deep. You can walk down into it, but be careful as there are no fences or railings.
On a sunny day, it’s quite possible that you’ll have it all to yourself! If you don’t want to walk down into it, you can also just admire its beauty from above. As you descend, look for signs of glacial activity along its walls.
Among other things, there are large striations in some places – these are scratches left by rocks dragged across by glaciers during their movement. Glacial till (rocks and gravel) at the bottom of Fjadrargljufur Canyon was deposited here when glaciers retreated after last ice age. There’s a small lake at the bottom – if you look closely enough, you might see some water lilies growing among rocks!

The two main ones you can see from Reykjavik are Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, both within an hour’s drive from downtown. Seljalandsfoss is located just off Route 1, about 40 minutes from downtown. It is possible to walk behind it but there is a barrier so you can’t go all the way through.
At Skógafoss you can swim right up next to it or walk behind it on a path that goes around half of it. If you have time, also check out Hafragilsfoss which is located near Seljalandsfoss on Route 1. You will find several other waterfalls in Iceland if you have more time for exploring!
